Scientists are Trying To Boost Cloud Reflectivity

Jessica Medrado, MCB's engineering lead at the Coastal Atmospheric Aerosol Research and Engagement (CAARE) facility.

Have you ever wondered if we can make clouds act like giant mirrors to cool down the planet?

Some brainy scientists are testing out this wild idea using sea salt spray in sunny California. This whole wizardry is called marine cloud brightening (MCB), and it’s like giving clouds a makeover so they can reflect more sunlight back into space. Pretty cool, right?

Where This Magic Trick Began

It all starts with these tiny particles called aerosols, which are like the magic seeds clouds need to form. The Earth’s been doing its own version of this trick for ages. Volcanoes go “boom” and pump aerosols into the sky, making clouds around them brighter with tinier droplets. Even ships cruising in the ocean have been caught on satellite making clouds sparklier.

Fun fact: When ships toned down their emissions in 2020, the seas got a tad warmer. Counterintuitive, huh? Shows how much cloud bling can affect our planet’s thermostat.

Sarah Doherty, a scientist from the University of Washington, puts it this way: Most of us know about the greenhouse effect heating things up, but the particles we’ve been adding to the mix? They’ve been secretly dialing back the heat a bit. Without these particles playing superhero, we’d be sweating even more from global warming.

The Marine Cloud Brightening Squad

The University of Washington’s got this team, the MCB Program, with more than 35 smarty-pants from all sorts of fields, led by Doherty and her colleague Robert Wood. They’re all about figuring out how to get clouds to wear their shiny armor so they can protect us from too much sun.

The team’s game plan?

Cloud-Aerosol Research Instrument (CARI) project

Spraying sea salt into the air to see if they can turn regular clouds into super-reflective ones. They’ve got this gadget called the Cloud-Aerosol Research Instrument (CARI) that’s pretty much a fancy sea salt spray bottle for the atmosphere.

Why Sea Salt?
Turns out, sea salt is like cloud candy. It loves water, making it perfect for creating those shiny, reflective cloud droplets. And the best part? There’s a ton of it in the ocean, just waiting to be used.

The Dream and the Hurdles

The dream scenario here is cooling the planet a notch, even if it’s just a smidge. But it’s not all rainbows and butterflies. There are loads of challenges, like figuring out the perfect size for those salt particles and understanding what this all means for Mama Earth in the long run.

Doherty’s like, “Hold up, we’ve got a ton of homework to do before we even think about going big with this.” It’s about being super careful to make sure we don’t end up with a plot twist no one saw coming.

Looking Forward

Let’s get real: MCB isn’t going to single-handedly save the planet from climate change. The real MVP move is still to cut down on CO2 emissions and tackle the root of the problem. But hey, in a world where every little bit counts, this cloud-brightening gig could be a cool side quest in our big climate change battle.
